R1 818 880 for Last Supper
20 May 2013
Strauss & Co, Johannesburg: The much disputed decision by the Institute for Catholic Education to sell the Cecil Skotnes triptych removed from the Santa Sophia Chapel in Pretoria has had an astounding result.
The work titled The Last Supper realised Strauss & Co’s hoped for dream this evening. The panels sold to a private collector who plans to make the work available to a public institution. The pre-sale estimate of R300 000 – 400 000 was overshot by the final price realised of R1 818 880. The work is to be sent to a conservator where it will be restored to its original glory before taking pride of place in the soon to be named museum. The proceeds from the sale are to go to an educational trust.
The auction which took place at Strauss & Co’s new auction venue at the Wanderers Club in Illovo realised just over R47 000 000 with the highest price of just below R6 000 000 for an extensive landscape by JH Pierneef.
