Strauss & Co to sell one of the world's most reproduced paintings
15 May 2013
Johannesburg: Frans Oerder’s still life, Blossom Time, will be sold at Strauss & Co’s much anticipated Evening Sale on Monday 20 May 2013 in the Wanderers Club Ballroom.
This magnificent large-scale work is partner to his Magnolias, both of which were purchased by the New York Graphic Society for the purpose of reproducing them. The reproductions first went on sale in 1939 and proved to be extremely popular. Collectively, they achieved the highest world sales of any still life reproductions and Oerder became known and appreciated internationally. The original paintings were returned to South Africa in 1956 when they were bought by private collectors with whom they remained until coming to auction with Strauss & Co, Magnolias in 2009, which established a world record for the artist of R1 782 000, and now Blossom Time.
As noted by Esmé Berman, “there were finer examples of his work in South African public collections, but – certainly during the 1940s – no paintings by any South African were better known.”
This prolific artist was born and trained in the Netherlands. An accomplished landscape painter, he is perhaps better known for his still life paintings. In this composition Oerder captures a delightful marriage between a traditional still life and the keenly observed reflection of the exterior landscape in the glass vase.
If any painting threatens to break the existing world record for Oerder, this could well be it.
