Jewels auction benefits the "doggies"
24 Mar 2014
Last week R250 000 was raised at Strauss & Co’s Cape Town auction to benefit three animal charities, namely The Cape of Good Hope SPCA, The Johannesburg SPCA and the Animal Rescue Organisation of the Western Cape.
Some 40 lots of pretty jewellery, mainly delicate Victorian and Edwardian pieces, were snapped up by animal lovers, dealers and collectors alike. From the outset prices began to climb to dizzy heights with some lots selling up to five times their pre-sale estimates. The packed auction room and busy telephone banks were characterised by enthusiastic bidding throughout, displaying the generous spirit of all the participants. Highlights included an 1860s gold and agate-mounted pendant/locket which sold for R18 000 against a presale estimate of R4 000-6 000, a pair of amethyst and diamond earrings, part of a lot of 8 items, that sold for R20 000, and an American 14ct gold necklace by Forstner, which sold for R26 000.
It was the wish of the consignor that the entire proceeds of the sale of her collection be donated to these animal rescue organisations that are in constant need of support and funding. As a token of their support, Strauss & Co entered into the spirit and donated their entire seller’s commission.
Ann Palmer, a director of Strauss & Co, commented after the sale, “We are delighted with these fantastic results which far exceeded our expectations. It was an honour for Strauss & Co to have handled the successful sale of these intricate and exquisite pieces and a great tribute to the generosity of the seller who, I know, would have been delighted with the final amount to be donated to the animal organisations which were so close to her heart.”
