Sculpture price soars to dizzy heights
2 Jun 2015
A rare sculpture by the South African born artist Ernest Mancoba who left South Africa in 1938 for Paris where he met and married the famous Dutch artist Sonja Verlov, last night astounded the South African art buying public when it sold for R613 872.
The work entitled Musician depicted a musician playing a skapu. This is the first piece of sculpture by Mancoba to be sold in the South African art market. He died in 2002 at the age of 98. The auction house Strauss & Co initially valued the work at R70 000 as the artist had no prior auction record in South Africa.
The sale totalled R48 million with five lots selling over R1 million and three lots over R3 million The success of the sale once again proves the strength of the South African art market. The sell-through rate both by lot and by value exceeded 82% firmly establishing Strauss & Co as the most successful auction house for South African art.
