Bidding on Strauss Online Auction starts 8 April
7 Apr 2016
Strauss & Co’s next eagerly awaited Online auction, which will run from 8 to 18 April 2016, features some of South Africa’s favourite artists, at accessible prices and unrivalled convenience.
Strauss & Co’s next Online-only auction will open at 8am on Friday, 8 April. These auctions provide an excellent opportunity for new and emerging collectors to discover works by their favourite South African artists at accessible prices. Encouraged by the ease and convenience of bidding online, established collectors have also taken up this platform with enthusiasm.
The April Online sale will feature a range of more than 400 lots, including a variety of exciting artworks, ranging from prints, paintings and drawings to sculpture and photography, plus an interesting selection of international and decorative arts. Estimates range from between R800 to R50 000. The auction will remain open for ten days, closing at 8pm on Monday, 18 April.
Among the highlights are works on paper by some of South Africa’s most popular artists, including Robert Hodgins, Walter Battiss and Penny Siopis. A pencil sketch by JH Pierneef is sure to attract considerable interest. The fantastic range of well-priced original works features not only Battiss and Johannes Meintjes, but also drawings by members of the increasingly collectible Amadlozi Group such as Sydney Kumalo, Ezrom Legae and the group’s founder, Cecil Skotnes. A small sculpture by Anton Momberg, Standing Nude, has already attracted considerable attention. Young stars such as Lionel Smit are represented, as are contemporary photographers such as Nontsikelelo Veleko. Among the international artists, John Piper makes a showing. Of particular interest among the decorative arts is an impressive selection of contemporary glass.

“Our online auctions have attracted new collectors not only because they are accessible and user-friendly,” says Susie Goodman, General Manager of Strauss & Co’s Johannesburg office, “but also because they make it possible for clients to participate regardless of where they are in the country, or in the world for that matter.”
Strauss & Co launched its online bidding platform in 2013, putting it at the forefront of digital innovation in its field. In addition to the four live auctions held each year – two in Johannesburg and two in Cape Town – Strauss & Co also holds four online auctions a year. The company remains the only fine art auction house in the country to offer these dedicated online auctions.
Unlike conventional auctions, online auctions afford buyers the opportunity to browse and bid at their leisure from a secure, easy-to-use online platform, without the pressure of a packed saleroom. During the sale the system is constantly being updated so that bidders can follow the progress on the lots in which they are interested.
“All works on the sale come with the assurance that they have been checked and catalogued by Strauss & Co specialists, and come with the guarantee of quality and authenticity for which the company is known,” says Goodman.
Visit www.straussartonline.co.za and register to browse, bid and buy online from anywhere in the world between 8am on Friday 8 April to 8pm on Monday 18 April 2016.
