Maggie Laubser’s portrait of a raffish Cape shepherd wearing two peacock feathers in his hat leads a strong selection of lots by this important expressionist painter, due to go on offer at Strauss & Co’s 16 October live sale at the Vineyard Hotel, Cape Town.

An important drawing from William Kentridge’s award-winning 1991 film Sobriety, Obesity, and Growing Old was the top lot by value at Strauss & Co’s spring sale in Cape Town. The drawing sold to a telephone bidder for R4 092 480, well above its high estimate.

The diverse artistic traditions from KwaZulu-Natal receive a special focus on Strauss & Co’s coming Johannesburg live auction, due to be held at the Wanderers Club on 13 November. The sale, which also includes a selection of remarkable highveld landscapes and rare wartime South African artworks, contains 59 lots by historical and contemporary artists from the Zulu kingdom.

Strauss & Co is delighted to present a number of important artworks by artists who lived and worked in Namibia, as well as by renowned South African artists who were captivated by the country’s natural beauty.

Sydney Kumalo was in his early thirties when he began work on his Madala series, highly collectable bronzes depicting old men and cast in small editions by dealer Egon Guenther. A very rare example from this series, Madala VI (estimate R700 000 – 900 000), will go on sale at Strauss & Co’s live auction at the Wanderers Club, Johannesburg, on 13 November.

Strauss & Co’s fourth and final live auction of 2017 ended on a high note in Johannesburg, with combined sales totalling R76 million. The exceptional result, achieved on a solid 84.32% value sell-through rate, helped push the company’s annual turnover into record territory. Combined sales for the financial year to date are R322 584 601.
