Strauss & Co valuation road show heads to Eastern Cape
9 May 2017
Following on Strauss & Co’s recording-topping March live sale in Cape Town, which generated a headline turnover of R70.6 million on a solid 84% sell-through rate, the company is embarking on a valuation road show in the Eastern Cape.
Strauss & Co experts, Vanessa Phillips, Kirsty Colledge and Ian Hunter, will be visiting East London, Port Elizabeth, Plettenberg Bay and Swellendam from 22 – 25 May to conduct obligation-free valuations of art, silver and Oriental porcelain.
Phillips is Strauss & Co’s joint managing director and an expert in furniture, silver, ceramics, glass and jewellery, while Colledge and Hunter both share expertise in the various disciplines of art.
“Our valuation road show is always much anticipated by collectors in the Eastern Cape, and indeed by our experts too, who are always delighted and amazed by the wonderful things they are presented with,” says Vanessa Phillips.
A 2016 road trip to the Eastern Cape generated some remarkable finds. A sunny landscape of Tietiesbaai by Stanley Pinker brought to the Swellendam valuation day was later sold for R1 250 480 at Strauss & Co’s October 2016 live sale in Cape Town, well above its high estimate of R700 000. Other notable finds included an undated floral still life by Maggie Laubser, from a valuation day in Knysna, which sold for R431 984, also above its high estimate.
Valuations are by appointment and cost R20 per item. Proceeds generated by the obligation-free valuations are always donated to the host institutions, or their specified charity.
