Strauss & Co is delighted to announce details of its forthcoming live sale in Johannesburg on 12 November. The sale, which has a combined pre-sale estimate of R80 million, is a celebration of Johannesburg and its many talented artists, curators and collectors. The sale commemorates the city’s important role in shaping South African art history.

In a packed saleroom at the Wanderers Club on Monday, November 12th, an exceptional casein landscape by J.H Pierneef and an oil painting by Moses Tladi set new records at Strauss & Co’s live Summer sale, which confirmed it as the pioneering auction house on the African continent.

Cape Town (16 November 2018) – A selection of exciting works from leading contemporary artists from Africa and its diaspora will be up for auction at Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA). Held in partnership with Strauss & Co, the much-anticipated live auction will take place at the museum on Saturday 1 December 2018.

Strauss & Co is pleased to announce details of its first-ever dedicated contemporary art sale, due to be held on 17 February 2018. The venue for the 71-lot sale is an impressive former warehouse overlooking the Duncan Docks, a harbour facility at the Port of Cape Town.

The hubbub of a working harbour provided the backdrop for Strauss & Co’s inaugural contemporary art sale, the first such auction in South Africa to focus exclusively on this burgeoning category of art.

Important works representative of South Africa’s diverse and evolving artistic practices from the twentieth and twenty-first century will go under the hammer at Strauss & Co’s much-anticipated Cape Town sale on 5 March at The Vineyard Hotel. Among the standout lots being offered is an Egyptian-themed architectural drawing by William Kentridge from his 2005 production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute and a vivid still life with coffee utensils and ripening fruit by Erik Laubscher.

A bold and colourful Still Life with Coffee Pot and Fruit by Erik Laubscher set a new world record at Strauss & Co’s live sale in Cape Town last night, selling for R 2.273 million.

An extraordinary portrait by sought-after painter Alexis Preller depicting Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, will go on sale at Strauss & Co’s June auction in Johannesburg.
