Asian Decorative Arts and Jewellery Focus in Strauss & Co's 2019 May Online Sale
3 May 2019
Following their most successful auction to date held in Cape Town in March this year, Strauss & Co is delighted to offer the balance of pieces from the Dr JR and Mary Strong Collection of Chinese and Japanese Ceramics and Works of Art, as well as those from the Estate Late Sol Munitz Collection, both seasoned collectors.
The Strong Collection features a variety of jades, netsukes, agates, porcelain and glass snuff bottles, all of which will appeal to any collector, whether established or embarking on a new field of discovery. Of particular interest, is a Chinese jade figure of Zhou Yanzi, from the Chinese folk tale in which the boy, bravely cloaked in a deerskin, roamed amidst the herd in order to collect milk which he believed would restore his elderly parents’ declining vision. This is being offered together with another celadon jade figure at estimates of R8 000 – 10 000. Amongst the netsukes, is a carved wood example depicting Nitta Shirô Tadatsune in the act of slaying the giant boar. In 1193 this Japanese general took part in a hunting expedition at the base of Mount Fuji. On being attacked by a giant boar, he leaped on its back, killing it with his knife when it was still running. (Estimates R3 000 – 4 000). Fascinating folklore lies behind every piece in this section.
Other highlights include a Peking turquoise glass bottle vase from the Munitz Collection (Estimates R4 000 – 6 000), a Japanese bronze miniature vase, produced by the Nogawa Company during the Meiji Period (1868-1912), and decorated in silver and copper with trailing cherry blossom, (Estimates R6 000 – 8 000), and a Chinese famille rose yellow ground vase enamelled with dragons (Estimates R8 000 – 10 000).
Affordable jewellery forms part of this sale and includes pieces from Estate late Mrs Sonia Lapin. Amongst the highlights are two attractive emerald, diamond and 14ct gold brooches in the form of bees (Estimates R5 000 – 7 000), an unusual diamond, onyx and white gold ring (R6 000 – 8 000), and several gold, pearl and lapis lazuli bead necklaces.
Paintings from the Lapin Estate will be sold on the forthcoming Johannesburg live auction which takes place on Monday 20 May, 2019, at The Wanderers Club.
The Online Sale opens 8am on Monday 6 May and will close at 8pm on Monday, 13 May 2019.
