Strauss & Co hosts “YGGDRASIL” at Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees 2024

YGGDRASIL is the brainchild of South African-born artist Marlene Steyn, the 2024 Woordfees Artist of the Year, and longtime collaborator and friend, Lezanne Viviers from VIVIERS, alongside Pulp Paperworks and Edition Verso. YGGDRASIL seamlessly blends paper-making, paper-cutting, paper-printing, and paper folding into playful, wearable art and a series of toroidal printed impressions on orgonite pulp.

Selected pieces, both wearable and framed, will be included in this year’s auction and showcased on the 4th of October, with a dynamic salon-style performance, juxtaposed to highlights from Strauss & Co’s upcoming auctions.

The event will introduce a special presentation of Steyn’s handmade ceramics, enhancing the models as they transform into living artworks. Attendees can also look forward to an in-depth panel discussion featuring Lezanne Viviers and Marlene Steyn, who will share exclusive insights into the inspiration behind YGGDRASIL and more about the quadruple collaboration—when a painter, a designer, a paper-maker, and a print-maker decide to play together. This engaging conversation will take place in three parts, interspersed with calming Breaths of Gaia and highlights, fresh off the runway, of VIVIERS’ latest collection, DISCLOSURE.

Additionally, Marlene Steyn will provide insights into her solo museum exhibition, “Between my I’s: Tussen my oë,” currently on display at the University of Stellenbosch Sasol Museum, which is also part of the Woordfees program.
