February ART — An Array of Mediums and Rare Archival Works

31 Jan 2025

Strauss & Co is delighted to announce ‘February ART’, a thoughtfully curated timed online auction, closing on 10 February at 2 pm. The sale brings together a selection of works spanning multiple mediums, including works on paper, books, ceramics, photography and sculpture, by both South African and international artists.

Among the sale highlights are two paintings by Mmakgabo Mmapula Helen Sebidi, Taking Them Out to Graze (estimate R 18 000 – 24 000) and The Aloes, Near Hebron, TVL (estimate R 18 000 – 24 000) which showcase her distinctive approach to documenting the landscape.

The ‘Art Club’ session comprises a selection of international artists, including Marc Chagall and Frank Stella, described by the renowned publication ArtForum as “a giant in the arenas of Minimalism and post-painterly abstraction,” following his death in 2024. Additionally, the sale features works by Maud Sumner, whose artistic practice was shaped by her experiences in France, England, and Southern Africa. Sumner’s paintings reflect a deeply personal and nuanced exploration of place and identity.

The ‘Impression/Expression’ session presents an array of works, including Reading Chambers (Encyclopedia) (estimate R 50 000 – 70 000) by William Kentridge and a collection of rare etchings by Cyprian Shilakoe, an artist whose work was recently highlighted in a significant exhibition at the Norval Foundation, ‘They Came and Left Footprints’. Shilakoe, a former pupil at Rorke’s Drift, was renowned for his daring approach to printmaking.

February ART includes a dedicated focus on the work of Francois Roux, whose serene landscapes and abstracted figures capture a delicate balance of light, colour and form. His works, such as Ferry at Sunset (estimate R 3 000 – 5 000), Autumn (estimate R 4 000 – 6 000) and Table Mountain Path (estimate R 3 000 – 5 000), showcase his masterful use of subtle hues and soft compositions.

Complementing the artworks is a curated selection of important art books, including George Pemba: Against All Odds by Sarah Hudleston and Irma Stern: ‘n Fees van Kleur by Marion Arnold. Of particular note is the Ponte City book by Mikhael Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse. This archive — which consists of an exhibition catalogue and a clothbound hardcover in a screen-printed cardboard box with 17 separate staple-bound booklets — showcases the artists’ evolving exploration of Johannesburg’s iconic Ponte City tower through layered narratives and mixed media.

Contemporary works also feature prominently in the sale, with works by Brett Charles Seiler, Olivié Keck, Lwando Dlamini and Khanyisile Mawhayi, whose practices offer a compelling dialogue within the contemporary art landscape in South Africa. Additionally, a selection of ceramic art by Yvonne Levy, Euriel Damann, and Mpho Mokgatlhe, including Mokgatlhe’s Udu Drum, adds a textural element to the auction.
