Adebunmi Gbadebo

American 1992-

Adebunmi Gbadebo, born in 1992 in New Jersey, is a multimedia artist who explores themes of land, memory, and history, focusing on sites of slavery. Her work incorporates materials like indigo, soil from plantations, and hair to investigate ancestral stories and address historical erasure. Through her research and art, Gbadebo reclaims narratives related to her family’s history of enslavement, particularly at the True Blue plantation in South Carolina. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York and holds a certification in Creative Place Keeping at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Gbadebo has exhibited internationally and her work is held in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minneapolis.
