Adriaan van Zyl was born in 1957 in Vredenburg on the West Coast. He received his Bachelor of Fine Art and Honours Degree from Stellenbosch University in the early 1980s. After graduating, he became a full-time painter. He was twice an artist in residence at Cite Internationals de Arts in Paris, France, where he also participated in group exhibitions. Van Zyl settled in Stellenbosch in 1992 and lectured sometimes at Stellenbosch University and the University of the Witwatersrand. Sadly, van Zyl’s career was cut short in 2006, when he passed away after a long cancer battle at the age of 49. A photorealistic painter, he held six solo exhibitions in South Africa, the last was a series of paintings titled Hospitaaltyd (Hospital Time).
