Alan Crump

South African 1949-2009 

A master printmaker and watercolourist, Alan Crump’s work ranged from esoteric conceptual etchings to monumental large-scale landscape paintings of breathtaking beauty and technical dexterity. In addition to teaching, mentoring, curating and publishing, he was influential in arts administration at various levels, worked with galleries and public and corporate collections, sat on acquisitions committees and advisory boards, and shaped the Standard Bank National Arts Festival, Grahamstown, in a number of important ways.

Students who came into his ambit during his years at the University of the Witwatersrand include such currently renowned artists as Jane Alexander, Deborah Bell, Kim Berman, Candice Breitz, Kendell Geers, Joachim Schönfeldt and Diane Victor.
