André Naudé

South African 1950-2023

André Naudé was born in Pretoria in 1950. He received both his bachelor’s (1972) and master’s degrees (1995) in fine arts from the University of Pretoria. During the 1970s and 80s, Naudé taught at high schools in Johannesburg and Cape Town, before becoming a lecturer in painting at the University of Pretoria from 1988 to 1998. After that, he continued in academia part-time but focused on his art full-time from 2001 onward. Naudé’s work is colourful, playful, and often darkly humorous and his subject matter ranges from environmental issues to commentaries on the social condition.

Throughout his career, Naudé participated in about eighty solo and group shows in South Africa and abroad, including a mid-career retrospective at the Pretoria Art Museum in 2001. He is featured in various public collections such as the ABSA Bank Corporate Art Collection in Johannesburg, the Durban Art Museum, the Pretoria Art Museum, the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, Cite Internationale des Artes in Paris, France, and Nando’s in the United Kingdom, amongst many others.
