Anna van der Ploeg

South African 1990- 

Anna van der Ploeg (b. 1990, South Africa) is a contemporary artist based in Brussels. She holds a Fine Arts degree from the University of Cape Town and a Master’s from KASK Royal Academy of Art, Gent, where she received the Leu de Legaat Award. Van der Ploeg has exhibited internationally and held residencies at Museum M, Leuven (2023), and Reservoir Projects, Cape Town (2024).

Her interdisciplinary practice spans sculpture, painting, printmaking, and writing, focusing on societal imagination and collective self-perception. Her labor-intensive process transforms materials
into poetic devices, influenced by South Africa’s post-apartheid transformation.

“This woodblock pays homage to the ever-shifting ‘self,’ referencing a drawing by Ed Ruscha and the impulse to leave marks on our environment. It also functions as a self-portrait.”
