Artists

Brett Charles Seiler was born in Zimbabwe, and currently lives and works in Cape Town.

He attended the Ruth Prowse School of Art, graduating in 2015. Sieler’s earlier, more experimental artworks included found objects and old photographs, with his more recent works focusing on painting, performance, and installation. Seiler has honed his production to create a unique style using a subtle palette reminiscent of black and white photography that explores the male body through momentary images of loving romantic gestures and sexual interaction. He uses text in his works to accentuate the stories told by the male subjects in his paintings, often making his work nostalgic, anxious, sentimental, and sometimes comic. Seiler explores his own varied experience as a gay man by questioning gay rights and focusing on the sexual oppression of gay men and Queer history.

Seiler has exhibited extensively in South Africa, participated in group shows in the United States and Europe and most recently held solo shows through Everard Read in London and in Berlin with Gallery Eigen+Art.
