César Baldaccini dit César

French 1921-1998 

César Baldaccini dit César was a French sculptor and member of the Nouveau Réalisme movement, best known for his use of compacted cars and recycled metals. Born 1921 in Marseille, France to Italian parents, he went on to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and graduated in 1948. Despite having received classical academic training, he instead trained his focus to the inspiration he found from scrap metal and the language of its materiality. He later represented France at the 1995 Venice Biennale, and today his work can be found in the collections of prominent institutions around the world including the Tate Gallery in London, The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
