Dorothea Sharp

British 1874-1955

Dorothea Sharp was a British artist born in 1873 in Dartford, England. She is noted for her sunlit, idyllic paintings of flowers, landscapes, and seaside scenes, often including children at play. At twenty-one, she enrolled in the Richmond Art School and continued at the Regent Street Polytechnic. Following this education, Sharp went to Paris where she was intensely inspired by the Impressionists, particularly Claude Monet. She became an Associate of the Society of Women Artists in 1903 and a full member in 1908. She was also elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1907 and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1922. Her first solo exhibition was at the Connell Gallery in 1933. Sharp exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy and Paris Salon. She travelled extensively in Europe, spending significant time in St Ives, where she produced many plein air works.
