Ethel May Dixie

South African 1876-1973

Ethel May Dixie was a South African botanical artist born in Sea Point, Cape Town, in 1876. A largely self-taught watercolourist, Dixie was the principal illustrator for Dr Rudolph Marloth’s six-volume series The Flora of South Africa, which ran from 1913 to 1932. She was also a lecturer at the Cape Town School of Art. Dixie was a disciplined painter, working from 9 am until noon. In her advanced years, she sold her paintings in aid of the old age home where she lived until her death at 97. Dixie was appointed an honorary life member of the Botanical Society of South Africa on her 90th birthday in recognition of her services to botany.
