Gert Swart, born in Durban, is widely regarded as one of the finest sculptors from KwaZulu-Natal. He studied Fine Art at the Durban Art School between 1982 and 1983 and was mentored by well-known artists Andries Botha, Jeremy Wafer and Clive van den Berg.

Swart does not have a preference for a particular medium and has produced work in stone, marble, metal and wood, and has cast numerous works in bronze. His most recent work has been in wood, combining wooden constructions with intricate wooden carving.

Swart has been awarded a number of high-profile commissions, including the Isandlwana monument to the Zulu Fallen, The Nkosi Albert Luthuli Monument in KwaDukuza, The ESSA cross for the Sisters of the Precious Blood at Marianhill Convent, and a lectern for the Johannes Stegmann Art Gallery, amongst others.

Swart’s sculpture can be found in most of the prominent public collections in the country, including Oliewenhuis Art Gallery, Pretoria Art Gallery, the Tatham Art Gallery and Botswana National Gallery. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions and has held a number of solo exhibitions, the most notable of which was Contemplations, an extensive exhibition held at the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg in 1997.
