Gregory John Kerr

South African 1949- 


Gregory John Kerr was born in Johannesburg in 1949. In 1972, he received his bachelor's degree in English and Fine Art from the University of the Witwatersrand and his HED from the Johannesburg College of Education. This was followed by an Honours degree and another bachelor’s degree from the University of South Africa (1976 and 1977, respectively) and culminated in a PhD in 1985 from the University of Georgia in the USA. A constant academic, Kerr has worked in various positions – from lecturer to Professor, to Head of the Department of Fine Arts, to Dean – at many South African institutions of Higher Education, including Johannesburg College of Education (1976 to 1988), Technikon Witwatersrand (1988 to 1994), Stellenbosch University (1995 to 2000), Port Elizabeth Technikon (2001), and Nelson Mandela University (2008 – on). In 2015, he opened the Greg Kerr Gallery in Prince Albert to exhibit his artwork. Kerr has been exhibiting regularly throughout South Africa since the early 1980s. His work is represented in the collections of many of the country's universities and at the Anglo American Corporation, Sandton Art Foundation, Telkom, and the William Humphreys Gallery in Kimberley.
