Hank Willis Thomas

American 1976- 


Hank Willis Thomas is a Brooklyn-based conceptual artist whose work explores identity, race, and consumer culture. Born in 1976 in Plainfield, New Jersey, he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University and a Masters in Fine Arts from the California College of the Arts. Thomas uses photography and other media to challenge societal stereotypes and the commodification of Black male identity. His public art projects, such as The Embrace (2023) in Boston, encourage reflection on social justice and equality. A cofounder of For Freedoms, Thomas has received several accolades, including the Guggenheim and Gordon Parks Foundation Fellowships. His work is in major collections like the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, both in New York City.
