Jack (Jacobus) Pieters

South African 1886-1977 

Jack (Jacobus) Pieters was born in 1886 in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He arrived in South Africa in the mid-1910s and initially settled in Pretoria before moving to Cape Town and then, ultimately, Durban. He became friends with many of his contemporaries, including Pieter Wenning and Tinus de Jongh. Pieters was a member of several art societies and participated in group shows with them. Additionally, he became an art critic for the Natal Mercury. His oil paintings capture an array of genres, from still lifes to portraits to various landscapes and seascapes.
