South African 1919-1994 

James Thackwray, a Cape artist, was born in 1919. He portrayed still lifes, landscapes, as well as town and rural scenes in his artwork. Thackwray's paintings frequently featured figures engaged in their everyday lives, and he is well known for his portraiture of the inhabitants of District Six and the Bo-Kaap.
