Janine Allen

South African 1971- 

Janine Allen is an artist and image philosopher at the Department of Fine Arts, University of the Free State. She completed her PhD under Prof Willem Boshoff and philosopher Prof Dirk van den Berg. Allen has received numerous awards, including the Villa Award at the Nirox Foundation, the Stals Prize for Art Sciences, the Free State International Art Festival ABSA Award, and the UFS Alumni Cum Laude Award. Her work on the Covid-19 pandemic has been exhibited at Corona Yarona (Constitution Hill), earning international recognition. She has participated in several residencies, including the Sacatar Foundation in Brazil and the Ampersand Foundation in New York. Her work is part of various collections, such as Telkom, MAPSA, and the Art Bank of SA.

Allen’s artistic focus spans painting, drawing, conceptual art, animation, installation, photography, and performance. Her recent work explores the Anthropocene, focusing on the agency of plants,
forests, and micro-organisms, while also engaging with animal-human relationships. In her performance piece created at Modern Art Projects in Richmond, Allen worked with a horse named Springs, exploring the dynamic between human and animal communication.
