Joel Sternfeld

American 1944-

Joel Sternfeld is an American fine-art photographer best known for his large-format colour photographs that capture contemporary American life and landscapes. His work played a significant role in legitimising color photography as a serious artistic medium, building upon the tradition of roadside photography initiated by Walker Evans in the 1930s. Sternfeld's images often explore the relationship between people and their environments, using colour as a vital element in conveying mood and meaning.

Sternfeld earned a BA from Dartmouth College and began focusing on colour photography in the 1970s, influenced by the colour theories of Johannes Itten and Josef Albers. Sternfeld's work is part of the Museum of Modern Art's collection in New York, and he teaches at Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York.

In 1992, the artist published Campagna Romana through Knopf, a project that emerged from his time as a Rome Prize fellow. During this period, he photographed the Roman countryside, capturing the tension between ancient ruins and the encroachment of modern development.
