John Shirley

South African 1948-

John Shirley is a South African ceramicist who was born in 1948. He began his career in 1970, initially working with porcelain. However, he now focuses on bone china due to its translucent qualities. Shirley started working with this medium in the 2000s while he was a student in Ceramic Design at Technikon Witwatersrand (now University of Johannesburg). During this time, he also started experimenting with soluble salts to add colour to his pieces. These efforts earned him the merit award at the 2008 Corobrick National Ceramics Biennale in Johannesburg and inclusion in the 5th World Ceramic Biennale in South Korea in 2009. In 2010, he became a member of the International Academy of Ceramics and a Fellow of Ceramics Southern Africa.
