Jonathan Freemantle

South African 1978-

Jonathan Freemantle (b. 1978, Cape Town) is a South African artist based in Edinburgh, Scotland. His work explores the relationship between the body, time, and the earth, often using natural materials such as wood, mountain rocks, indigo, and ochre. Freemantle integrates the landscape both as inspiration and material, blending the organic presence of the body with the environment. He has exhibited internationally since 2007, with shows in London, Cape Town, Madrid, and Johannesburg, and his work is part of collections including the Nirox Foundation, SAB Miller, Standard Bank, and the private collection of King Charles.

Freemantle’s art is informed by his classical training, focusing on the alchemy of materials and sacred art. His process is deeply connected to nature, often working outdoors to immerse himself
in the landscape. His recent work, created during a residency with the Hugo Burge Foundation, includes a piece carved from a century-old Cedar tree felled during storm Arwen. The work reflects
his devotion to nature and his spiritual connection to the natural world, aiming to create a language that resonates with higher energies.
