Kingsley Sambo

Zimbabwean 1936-1977

Kingsley Sambo, a Zimbabwean artist, studied art at the Cyrene Mission boarding school in the 1940s. In 1960, he became the cartoonist for the Daily News in Harare (then Salisbury). While in Harare, in the early 1960s, he joined Frank McEwen’s Workshop School, where he received further training in painting and began exhibiting in competitions and shows. Although he did sometimes sculpt works in stone, he is well known as a cartoonist and oil painter. His works are expressionistic, with loose brushstrokes and bright colours, and depict everyday life. Additionally, Sambo was a jazz guitarist who played at township shebeens, and the lively dance scenes he experienced were also a theme in his oeuvre.

Sambo’s works are in the collections of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Harare; the British Museum, London; and MoMA, New York City.
