Leigh Voigt

South African 1943-

Leigh Voigt’s artistic interest lies in her studies of trees, birds, fish, cattle, and wildlife. She is known for her particular focus on the patterns of the animals – capturing their essence rather than the intricate details. In addition to paintings, she has also been an illustrator for several books including Marguerite Poland and David Hammond-Tooke’s acclaimed 2004 book Abundant Herds about the AmaZulu people’s naming practices for their Nguni cattle. For this she spent 9 years studying her subjects and painting hundreds of watercolours and around 80 oil paintings. It is no surprise, then, that Voigt is a keen conservationist who assists with organisations such as the Endangered Wildlife Trust.

Voigt studied at the Johannesburg School of Art. Her first solo exhibition was at the Lloyd Ellis Gallery in 1967 and she has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions since. She is the daughter of botanical artist, Barbara Jeppe, and is married to fellow artist Harold Voigt with whom she has two sons.
