Louis Maqhubela

South African 1939-2021

Maqhubela was a member of Durant Sihlali’s weekend artists group and studied under Cecil Skotnes and Sydney Kumalo at the Polly Street Art Centre in Johannesburg while still at school. He worked as a commercial artist and created paintings and mosaics in hospitals, schools, halls and public buildings in and around Soweto. He received a return air ticket to Europe after winning first prize in the Adler Fielding Gallery’s annual ‘Artists of Fame and Promise’ exhibition in 1966. His encounter with Douglas Portway in St Ives, Cornwall, proved to be a meeting of minds that had a powerful impact on the subsequent work of both artists.
