Lucas Samaras

American 1936-2024

Lucas Samaras, born in 1936 in Kozani, Greece, was an American mixed-media artist known for his innovative contributions to contemporary art. He immigrated to the United States in 1947, eventually attending Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he met influential artists Allan Kaprow and Ron Lichtenstein. Later, he studied art history at Columbia University under art critic and theorist Meyer Schapiro. Samaras is celebrated for his work across painting, sculpture, photography, and performance art, often exploring themes of identity, memory, and transformation. His notable Box works are intricate assemblages of personal artefacts and photographs, reflecting his introspective approach. Samaras also gained recognition for his manipulated Polaroid self-portraits, challenging traditional representations of identity. His work has been exhibited extensively, with pieces in prominent collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Tate Gallery in London. Samaras passed away in 2024, leaving behind an influential artistic legacy.
