Matthew Hindley was born in Cape Town in 1974. In 2002, he graduated from the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art, where he earned the Simon Gerson Award and the Michaelis Prize for the best final year exhibition. Hindley’s paintings are a progression from intricate figuration to abstraction. He has also explored the use of technology within his art, such as Speak Naturally and Continuously, which was permanently re-installed on the façade of the Iziko South African National Gallery in 2019. This work turns conversations overheard in the museum’s atrium and turned them into a live stream of text.

Hindley has exhibited widely in South Africa and abroad, including at the 2015 Venice Biennale and in the 2021 exhibition National Identity at the Espronceda Institute of Art and Culture in Barcelona, Spain, alongside artists like William Kentridge and Zanele Muholi.
