Mfundo Mthiyane

South African 1991-

Mfundo Mthiyane (b. 1991, Durban, South Africa) is a multidisciplinary artist who began drawing under the influence of his uncle, artist Thokozani Mthiyane. He pursued his education at Durban
University of Technology’s Velobala Saturday Art Classes and earned a Multimedia Diploma from the Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design in 2012. After moving to Johannesburg in 2016 and
working as a graphic and web designer, Mthiyane became a full-time artist in 2019.

Mthiyane has participated in several group exhibitions, including In Your Shadow at SMAC Gallery and The Portrait Show at Everard Read Johannesburg. His solo show, A Book, was curated by Studio Nxumalo at Keyes Art Mile, Johannesburg.

His work, which he terms Mythaphorical Realism (a blend of myth and metaphor), is inspired by surrealism and explores the human condition, psychology, and spirituality. Using himself as a model, Mthiyane paints phantasmagoric scenes, using nature and objects as symbols to represent his personal experiences. Influenced by artists like René Magritte, Salvador Dali, and Johannes Phokela, Mthiyane’s work reflects his inner world through visual poetry.
