Paul Johan du Toit

South African 1965-2014

Paul du Toit, born in 1965, was a South African artist known for his distinctive work in painting, sculpture, and mixed media. Self-taught, he developed a signature style using bold black outlines and vibrant primary colours. His art, often described as playful and energetic, drew inspiration from punk music, personal experiences, and his travels. Du Toit exhibited widely, including at the 2001 Florence Biennale, and was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 2013. He worked with influential figures such as Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu on projects supporting social causes. Despite battling illness, du Toit remained creative until his untimely passing at 48.
