Percy Ndithembile Konqobe

South African 1938/1939- 

South African sculptor Percy Ndithembile Konqobe was born in 1939 in Nigel in the Gauteng Province. He is a largely self-taught artist who began his artistic practice in the 1970s. Konqobe acknowledges Sydney Khumalo as his mentor and supporter, whose influence on his style and subject matter is evident. As a traditional Zulu healer or sangoma, Konqobe also draws inspiration from the symbolism and mysticism of his dreams, which is reflected in his abstracted clay or bronze figures of animals and humans. He held his first solo exhibition at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg in 1988 and subsequently exhibited with Everard Read. His work can be found in various local and international collections.
