He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Versailles, first enrolling as a painter. He soon turned to sculpture instead opted to study at the prestigious Ecole Boulle in Paris. After his graduation in 1952, he was soon recruited into the design industry by Carlhian, a major Parisian decorator of the time.

For most of his career, Jean produced mainly furniture and lighting, being formally recognised for his creations through the receipt of several awards. In the 1970s, he set up a sculptural workshop which he ran in parallel to his activities as a designer.
