Pierre Bonnard

French 1867-1947

Pierre Bonnard was a French Post-Impressionist painter born in Fontenay-aux-Roses in 1867. He initially studied law at the Sorbonne in Paris, graduating in 1888, before shifting to focus on art and enrolling at the École des Beaux-Arts and Académie Julian. Bonnard was a founding member of the Nabis, a group of artists who used flat areas of colour and were influenced by Japanese prints and Paul Gauguin. His distinctive style is marked by vibrant colours and intimate domestic scenes, often featuring his wife, Marthe. Bonnard's works capture fleeting moments of beauty in everyday life.

Throughout his career, Bonnard experimented with various mediums, including printmaking and lithography, showcasing his versatility. He enjoyed critical acclaim in his lifetime and is now celebrated for his contributions to modern art. His legacy endures, with works held in major museums worldwide, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and the Tate Gallery in London.
