Raymond Andrews

South African 1948- 

Raymond Andrews was born in East London in 1948. He studied under Jack Lugg and Cecil Skotnes and was an assistant to Ernest Ullman for two years. In 1988, he was asked by Walter Battiss to join him at the UNISA Art Department as an assistant and external tutor in graphic arts. While he has created in many mediums, Andrews favours painted incised wood panels. Of his work Andrews says ‘If at all I attempt to convey a message, it is simply to remind one of forgotten dreams, hopes and aspirations and of the potential we all have to live in a state of gratitude, celebration and grace.’1 Andrews held his first solo show in Pretoria in 1967 and has since participated in numerous local and international solo and group shows.
