Ryan Hitchcock

South African 1974-

Ryan Hitchcock (b. 1974, Kuilsriver) is a self-taught photographer known for his experimental manipulation of light through custom-made filters. Originally from the hospitality industry, Hitchcock
transitioned to photography after joining his wife at The Art Room, a contemporary art gallery in Johannesburg. He has completed commissions for Tsogo Sun and Sun International, participated in several exhibitions, and his work is part of corporate collections.

Hitchcock’s work often transforms everyday landscapes into fantastical scenes by altering light before it enters the camera. His recent focus has shifted towards consciousness, as reflected in
his cyanotype work Don’t be the fish. Be the pond., which marks a new direction in his practice. Using a petroleum jelly-coated filter to create soft, hazy effects, the image was later developed into
a cyanotype print using a meticulous, multi-step process to achieve the desired tonal values and depth.
