Sphephelo Mnguni

South African 1990- 

Born in Durban in 1990, South African artist Sphephelo Mnguni’s multimedia practice explores the complexities of Black culture. Mnguni’s paintings are striking portraits of Black subjects that confront cultural stereotypes and advocate for recognition. His work is influenced by the inequalities of daily life and broader discussions around Blackness in South Africa and the diaspora. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Art from the Durban University of Technology in 2016. Mnguni’s work has been exhibited globally, including at the Ross Sutton Gallery in New York and BKhz Gallery in Johannesburg.
