Thania Petersen

South African 1980-

Cape Town-based multi-disciplinary artist Thania Petersen uses photography, installation and performance to explore issues of her identity in contemporary South Africa. Her artworks investigate the religious, cultural and traditional practices of Islam, her Cape Malay heritage and colonialist imperialism in Africa. This was followed by a year in Zimbabwe under venerated sculptor Sylvester Mubayi and a further year in South Korea, where she studied ceramics under the renowned Korean ceramist Hwang Yea Sook.

Petersen has participated in several group exhibitions, including the 3rd World Ceramic Biennale in South Korea in 2005 and the 2016 Cape Town Art Fair. She has held many solo exhibitions in Cape Town, including at WHATIFTHEWORLD, the AVA and the Everard Read Gallery. Her work is represented in prestigious private and public collections, both locally and internationally, including the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC, the National Museum of World Cultures Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town.
