Tracey Rose

South African 1974- 


Tracey Rose rose to international prominence in the early 2000s with a series of performance-based reimagining of female figures, some archetypal, others lifted from history. In addition to performance art, she creates in multiple other mediums, including photography, film, installation, and painting. Her works investigate issues of post-colonialism, race, gender, and sexuality.

Rose was born in 1974 in Durban. She joined the Johannesburg Art Foundation in 1990. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1996, attended The South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance in 2004, and attained her Master of Fine Arts from the University of London’s Goldsmiths College in 2007. Rose has exhibited extensively both in South Africa and abroad, including at the Queens Museum in New York City, New York, in 2023, the South African National Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2001, 2007, and 2019, the Tate Liverpool, UK, in 2010, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 2008, and Centre Pompidou in Paris, France in 2005. She lives and works in Johannesburg.
