Walter Westbrook

South African 1921-2015 


Known for his watercolour landscapes, South African artist Walter Edward Westbrook began painting at a young age and went on to study art in Pretoria under Walter Battiss. He spent the war years in North Africa and then Italy, where he was mentored by Italian Artist Francisco Caprioli. After the war, Westbrook held a solo show in Pretoria in 1947. In 1961, he joined the ‘Bloemfontein Group’ that had been established in 1958 by Prof Frik Scott and comprised artists Frans Claerhout, Reneé le Roux, Alexander and Marianne Podlashuc, and Eben van der Merwe. Westbrook participated in solo and group shows in South Africa, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and England and retrospective exhibitions of his work have been held at the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley, the University of the Free State, and the University of Pretoria.
