Youssef Nabil

Egyptian 1972-

Youssef Nabil, born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1972 and now based between New York City and Paris, is a photographer known for his intricately staged images echoing 1950s Egyptian cinema. By hand-colouring his black and white photographs, Nabil captures the romance and nostalgia of this era while exploring contemporary themes of beauty, sexuality, and cultural identity. His work often features strong female figures, such as Shirin Neshat and Fifi Abdou. Nabil began his career in the early 1990s, photographing friends as various characters, while pursuing his bachelor’s in French Literature from Ain Shams University, Cairo. His art has been widely exhibited across Europe, North America, Africa, and the Middle East. Nabil’s work is part of many important collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Pérez Art Museum in Miami (PAMM), the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, and the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
