Zamani Makhanya

South African 1959-

Zamani Makhanya was born in 1959 and grew up in the Lamont Township outside of Durban. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Fort Hare University in 1984, followed by his Honours in Higher Education the next year. Between 1986 and 1999, Makhanya taught at the Ntuzuma College of Education, leaving to become a full-time artist. In 1999 he established ‘Third Eye Vision’, an artist group whose purpose was to focus on the importance of being African. In his practice, Makhanya explores African symbolism, through building layered colour surfaces and then etching into those planes. He seeks to visually express and record the tales of Zulu cosmology. Through this imagery, he gives poetic form to African cultural ideas, spirituality, and aesthetics.
