About this Item

2003 Nikela
6 (1 x 6) 750ml

Red wine specialist, boutique cellar on the slopes of the Helderberg mountain in Stellenbosch established by CWG member Jeremy Walker in 1992.

Jeremy specialises in Pinotage and Bordeaux varietals, making wines with a reputation for their long cellaring potential, and one of the few producers to release wines into the market after acquiring essential bottle age of 5 years or more.

As it says on the label - "Handcrafted; Traditional; Unhurried; Classic Red Wines".

One of the first exponents of the 'Cape blend', the word “Nikela” is a Nguni word meaning “to offer a gift of dedication, respect or a tribute to one’s ancestors” - this wine being a tribute to winemaker Jeremy Walker’s late parents, Eddie and Betty, who contributed greatly to the establishment of Grangehurst, which was named after their childhood homes - “The Grange” and “Hurst Close” - in England.

Notes

Due to time constraints set upon us with the COVID-19 Lockdown no original bottle shots were taken.

Critics Ratings

'37% Pintoage, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Shiraz, 9% Merlot. Ripe red fruit, spice and fynbos on the nose. Also some developed character. Rich and broad on the palate with layers of flavour. Tannins show pleasant evolution. Long finish.' Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za 2011, 17.5/20

'Cape Blend, now with majority Pinotage, usual partners Cab, Shiraz, Merlot. 2003 Finely structured as ever, tight ripe tannins, savoury freshness, delicate extraction. Maintains reputation as one of the most polished of this genre. 2 Years oak.' - Platter's SA Wine Guide 2010, 4.5*
