About this Item
Founded in 1682, Rustenberg Estate on the Simonsberg foothills is one of the most historic and picturesque farms in South Africa. The farm was previously split into two estates, until 1945 when industrialist Peter Barlow purchased both farms and reunited them. Rustenberg is family-owned with son of Peter Barlow, Simon, owning the estate and grandson, Murray (2 x Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year) now cellar master.
Their flagship wine is named after Peter Barlow and is a site-specific 100% Cabernet Sauvignon high up on the Simonsberg. It is the oldest vineyard on the estate.
The 1998 was the last vintage made by Rod Easthope, before handing over the reigns to Adi Badenhorst in 1999. This was a golden era for Peter Barlow with both the 96 and 98 receiving top praise by Robert Parker (hard to come by for SA wines at the time).

Critics Ratings
Best New World Red Wine Steven Spurrier in UK Decanter Magazine 2001
'Standard-bearing red in classic style, quintessential stamp of Stellenbosch, Rustenberg and class. Lays stake in reclaiming the property's former brilliance, based on unstinting standards set by present day owner Simon Barlow's late father, Peter. 100% Cab from single site. Cropping cut to 6 tons per hectare. '98 is dense inky black, perfumed pencil lead, cedar / cigar box aromatics interleaved with floral violets, all understated. Ripe fruit foil for expertly managed tannins; never blowsy; oozes elegance. Measured oak belies generous 20 months maturation. 13.9% alc.' - John Platter's Wine Guide 2001, 4 ½*
92 Points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate 2001, at the time the highest score given to a SA red in Wine Advocate
