About this Item

1961 Cabernet
6 (1 x 6) 375ml

With its history dating back to 1692, Lanzerac Wine Estate is one of South Africa’s most famous properties. Their signature ‘ten-pin’ shaped bottle from the 60s and 70s is unique and the wines within have stood the test of time. Lanzerac produced the first commercial Pinotage in the world with the 1959.

These were bushvines with a low yield and hence the delicious Cabernet Sauvignon flavours after so many years. This 1961 was one of the final few to be bottled at Lanzerac, with production on the farm ceasing in the early 1970s, making this truly a collector’s item. The 1961 is mature and elegant with ample Cabernet Sauvignon character and savoury nuances.

Critics Ratings

When tasting this wine, among other legendary Cape reds of the time, Neal Martin admitted that this has forced him to rethink his views on the potential of Cape wine: "If this was what was being produced in SA at the time Bordeaux was producing the legendary 1961s, he observed, the Cape should not be treated as a newcomer on the world scene."
